Fuel Light is a series where we shine the spotlight on specific brands or events that focused on fitness, adventure, and aim to have a positive impact on our world.
Recently, we came across a project that has a sustainable, genuine initiative for everyone. Ecosia is a search engine that plants trees by using at least 80% of their ad revenue profits.
It couldn’t be simpler. Each time you search the web, search ads generate income for Ecosia, and then they use that income to plant trees (via tree planting programs across the world).
Ecosia started in 2009, and has already planted over 13 million trees - thanks to 5.5 million active users! Each year, as the project continues to grow, so does the number of trees. And if planting trees wasn’t enough to win you over, the project is (of course) also CO2-neutral.
Not only does this benefit the environment, but it also benefits the communities where these trees are being planted. The project also creates sustainable jobs, educational opportunities, healthier people and environmental security for local communities. For the past month, we’ve been using their search engine, and it’s been just as good as Google. Ecosia's search engine is actually powered by Microsoft Bing that is enhanced with their own algorithms.
Why trees? Here's some points from Ecosia why tree's are so beneficial:
Cool Climate - Trees absorb CO2, which is one of the main drivers of climate change. Larger forests can even create clouds, which then reflect the sunlight and cool our planet.
Biodiversity - Forests are the most diverse systems on land with millions of species out of which many have not even been discovered and analyzed yet.
Clean Air - Trees create oxygen, which we need to breathe. They also clean the air by absorbing pollutant gases and filtering out particulates.
Soil Protection - Trees protect the soil from erosion and they create productive and fertile land. If you cut down trees, you will very soon end up with a desert.
Water Regulation - Forests regulate the watercycles and prevent floods. They create moisturous microclimates and increase groundwater levels. They act like a “sponge” and therefore prevent droughts.
Happy People - Forests provide us with healthy food and lots of other products, which can be sustainably harvested. Worldwide the livelihood of 1.6 billion people depends on forests.
Ecosia has tree projects all over the world, and one of those places is in the Madagascar. Check out their video to see how much change they've brought there.
We couldn't recommend checking this project out more. It's easy to switch, Thanks to their Chrome and Firefox extensions, Android and iOS app. Not only is it easy to switch search engines, it's also easy to participate in helping the earth an communities. Give it a try!
